Let’s say you’ve done your homework, and done a thorough online search for web templates. Overwhelmed by the number of choices out there? This article will help give you a better idea as to how to choose web templates for your particular needs and preferences. But first, let’s start with the basics.
What is a web template?
A web template, or simply a template, is a ready-made design for a webpage or multiple-page website. The obvious advantage of using a template is rapid deployment, meaning that time from development to actually going live online becomes much, much shorter. Since a template is already pre-made for you, you cut down on time and effort rather than having to develop the code for the webpage from scratch, not to mention having to hire someone just to do it for you.
A template package typically includes most of its source files, which will enable you to further customize your template according to your needs and preferences. For customizing a web template, the most widely used tool is Adobe Dreamweaver, an HTML editor. Most downloadable templates nowadays are designed so that you can edit them on Dreameaver.
How to choose web templates
The following are some major considerations when choosing a web template.
1. Budget – The choice here is between a free web template and a web template that you would have to pay for. The obvious winner here would be whatever is free, right? Not necessarily. Free web templates work well for personal, family and organization websites. Websites that are crafted to sell goods or services online should be ready to shell out some money. Free web templates would include the barest minimum – design and source files. But they would not include many of the add-ons that make for successful, user-friendly online transactions. Some well-designed fashion web templates, for example, come with a handy sizing guide and multiple pages showcasing products.
All these add-ons come with a price, however. These add-ons include optional templates for e-marketing tools such as email blasts or newsletters; tools for online content management such as databases, and a monitoring and reporting system for Web traffic to your site. This allows you to modify your website based on the traffic that you get – an extremely useful tool for business sites!
Some good templates also come with at least a dozen pages filled with articles related to your website to help you draw search engines to your site (which is a major plus if you have a business). Other high-impact add-ons include music and Flash animations.
2. Time – Do you need your website up ASAP? Then get a simple web design with few graphic elements and fewer pages.
3. Manpower – Will you have someone to customize your web template for you? Or are you going it on your own? And just how much experience do you have editing website designs anyway? Look out for a web template package that can be edited on a widely used and user-friendly HTML editor with WYSIWYG interface, such as Dreamweaver or Frontpage.
4. Nature of business – For business and professional websites, it is important to match the nature of your business to the website template that you decide on. For example, sex may indeed sell, but putting half-naked women on an insurance website is probably not a good idea. Have a firm and clear of your corporate identity, from the overall image you want to project down to the fonts and colors that you want to use consistently.
Having a clear-cut picture of your business needs can also help minimize costs if you do go for a pay template. This will prevent you from being dazzled by all the add-ons out there. Remember, fancy add-ons come at a price. For example, does a speech therapist’s website really need 36 pages and a PayPal Shopping cart?
